 All buyers should obtain a sewer inspection if the home in question is more than 20 years old. The line might be fairly new compared to homes built before 1950, but it's fairly common for tree roots to clog it up over 20 years or so.

 If you suspect the home has clay or concrete lines, a sewer scope is a must. Even with plastic lines, we've found plenty of issues that need to be addressed. The couple hundred bucks you spend on a sewer scope inspection is well worth it to avoid costly and messy repairs in the future.

 Your sanitary sewer lateral is the pipe that carries your wastewater from your home (toilets, sinks, showers, laundry, floor drains, etc.) to the public sanitary sewer main that is typically in the street. Just like roofs and driveways, maintaining a lateral is the homeowners' responsibility. 

Inspections are typically start at the cleanout and end a the tap, which is roughly 100-200 feet away. Depending on a number of variables, an inspection takes approximately 20-30 minutes on average.
